Forming part of the award-winning Kings Cross Central development in London, Coal Drops Yard is home to some of London’s trendiest restaurants, cafés and independent boutique shops. Located just minutes from both King’s Cross and St Pancras stations, Coal Drops Yard is comprised of two long Victorian warehouses with train viaducts built in the 1800s that were once used to receive goods, including coal, arriving by rail from the North of England.
The yard has served many purposes over the years even housing London’s biggest rave venue, Bagley’s, for two decades. However, in recent time, Coal Drops Yard has been thoughtfully restored, undergoing a complete transformation to offer a vibrant creative public and retail space for Londoners and visitors alike.
With a clear ambition to attract more visitors to the area, encourage them to stay longer and increase the prominence and visibility of retail and office units, expert lighting designers, Studio 29 Lighting Design, were appointed to provide a creative and innovative lighting scheme that enhanced key areas.
The cleverly designed unique lighting scheme incorporates AFX’s linear LED for the gable ends of Coal Drops Yard in a bespoke cowl. This custom cowl, produced in house by AFX was finished with a unique paint which blends seamlessly into its surroundings during the day, whilst also providing effective light for the gable. It was especially important for Studio 29 Lighting to integrate the lighting scheme into the existing infrastructure, while maintaining and complementing the discerning aesthetics and heritage of Coal Drops Yard.
Demonstrating the success of the project, the lighting at Coal Drops Yard has enabled many visitors to enjoy the fabulous outdoor dining and late-night shopping experience, while also providing pedestrians with an opportunity to appreciate the unique character of the area.
